Retail – Lidl
Lidl Romania, in partnership with Mai Mult Verde, ASAP (The Army of Careful Selection of Plastic) and WWF-Romania, continues the project Clear Romania, in the period 1st-7th of September 2023.
Under the umbrella For a better future, Lidl Romania continued to invest in strategic partnerships to follow four main domains of social responsibility of the company: environment, education, development of emergency services and development of communities – aligned with the 17 Objectives of Sustainable Development of ONU.
Lidl opened a news tore in Bucharest on 17th of July, reaching 356 stores at national level.
Georgiana Radu took over the role of National Manager of Acquisitions and Marketing of Lidl Romania and takes part of the Management Council of the company.
Lidl Romania continued to encourage Romanian economy by supporting the development of local production of fruits and vegetables, made in safe food conditions, by Romanian producers.
Retail – Carrefour
Starting with 1st of July, Alina Gamauf, Member of the Executive Committee at Carrefour Romania, responsible of Human Resources, Corporate Affairs and CSR departments, expanded the activity domains, taking over the management of the Expansion and Property departments.
Carrefour Romania, Carrefour Foundation from France and WorldSkills Foundation Romania are preparing the specialty teachers in the sustainable gastronomy domain.
Retail – PENNY
PENNY, one of the most active retailers in Romania, opened two new stores in Ilfov and Arad and one store in Tartasesti, reaching a national network of 346 stores.
PENNY and The Academy of Economic Studies from Bucharest announced the results of the study about the development of some local solutions for business in agriculture and FMCG production, developed in the 3RO project.
Retail – Profi
The local producers from Romania that are reunited on the platform Via Profi became central characters of Treasure Games in Banat, the first reality show on social media, created by the platform Digital Chronicles.
Profi stores caps commercial additions in advance, helping its clients to face easily the shock generated by the excessive increase of the prices in the last period.
Retail – other retailers
Farmec, the biggest Romanian producer of cosmetics, opened two new Farmec brand stores, in the central zones of Sighisoara and Iasi.
FMCG
Laptaria cu Caimac, the producer of 100% Romanian dairy products, natural and minimum processed, celebrated 5 years of activity and launched Kefir, Kefir.
In the third edition of the program Taste Carefully. Enjoy the moment, supported by Mondelēz International, 9.420 students of 10th-11th school grades in Bucharest and in Iasi, Cluj and Mures with 418 teachers, school managers and school inspectors learned to develop healthy food behaviors.
Nestlé, the biggest company of food products and beverages in the world, launched in Romania the first pan-European line of Ready to Drink coffee, the NESCAFÉ Barista Style range. The producer finished the first 6 months of the year in Romania with an organic increase of 19.2%.
AGRANA group, the producer of the sugar labels Margaritar and Coronita, celebrated 25 years of activity in Romania.
RUCODEM – The Romanian Union of Cosmetics and Detergents Producers launched, at the beginning of June 2023, PREP P RO – The Project about the Resource Efficiency of Powder Products in Romania, a voluntary initiative that proposes to develop and encourage Romanian consumers’ behaviors to more sustainable models for washing clothes with more concentrated powder detergents. Bergenbier S.A., part of Molson Coors Beverage Company group, one of the main players on the beer market in Romania, had a financial performance in 2022 that was in line with the market, with a double digit growth of the market share. The producer finished 2022 with a market share of 798 millions lei, increased with over 11% than last year.
The group of companies AGRICOLA registered in the first 6 months of the year a total market share of almost 567.651 millions lei (almost 115 millions euro), with 13% more than the first part of last year.
MARESI Austria GmbH, a company that is part of the Austrian food group VIVATIS, with the headquarters in Viena, expanded its portfolio of nonfood products and took over the ENIGMA Trading 2000 company, in Romania, one of the main players on the local market of household products.
Food Service
Sphera Franchise Group, the biggest group from food service industry in Romania, consolidated the commitment towards the development of a sustainable business model by launching the 4-th sustainability report for 2022.
McDonald’s received the certificate for „Best Place to Work” in Romania, as a recognition sign for its commitment towards the work environment quality of over 5400 employees at national level.
E-commerce
In May and June, the acquisitions of local products registered an increase of almost 80% in the Freshful by eMAG platform, the first 100% online hypermarket in Romania, than any other period in the year.
The 5000 active Romanian entrepreneurs in the cross-border program of eMAG Marketplace made exports of over 5 millions products in Hungary and 3.3 millions in Bulgaria in the first half of this year.
Glovo, the multi-category platform that offers access to a big variety of products, launched new advertising options and services for partners and brands, integrated through Glovo Ads.
The ecommerce adoption for products that are used everyday increased more between eMAG clients who ordered, in the first half of the year with 22% more products from this category.
EcoBioGreen
With just five months until launching a new national system of collecting and recycling of beverages, TOMRA, the main global supplier of automatic collecting systems, opened a new logistics center of 4000 sqm near Bucharest.
ING Bank Romania gave a green finance of 426 millions lei to RetuRO Sistem Garantie Returnare, for the implementation of the most important project of circular economy at national level.
Services
The Competition Council launched an investigation about a possible violation of regulations in the domain by the companied Edenred Romania, Sodexo Pass Romania and Up Romania of the ticket issuing and trading market.
Analysis
In June 2023, in grocery retail in Romania were opened 27 stores, in this account entering just the stores opened and officially released by the retailers.
The beer market of Romania reported a decrease of 9% in the first five months in 2023 than the same period of 2022, according to the Romanian Brewers Association.

PROFI registered the biggest procentual increase of the market share, of 804%, in 2022 versus 2012. The retail sector attracted 21% of the total volume of investments registered in the first semester of 2023, increased with 7% than the same period of last year, being maintained at the value of 39 millions euro.
