The large retail chains, that are operating in Romania, maintained in 2018 the medium rhythm of growing of the fiscal value at 12% level, similarly with the one in 2017 and double than the consumer advance, which in the first ten months of the year recorded a plus of 5,9%, according to the second edition of the Retailers’ METRICS study, realized by Cushman & Wakefield Echinox.

In December 2018, a total of 62 stores was opened in the grocery retail in Romania: 14 Carrefour stores (2 hypermarkets, 10 stores under the Express brand and 2 stores under the Market brand), 23 PROFI stores (14 Standard and 9 Loco), 16 Mega Image stores (7 under the Mega Image brand and 9 under the Shop & Go brand), 1 Lidl store and 8 Penny Market stores.

The Romanian Competition Council sanctioned 7 companies active on the romanian retail & FMCG market (3 retailers and 4 suppliers) with fines totaling 18.8 million euros for fixing prices. The sanctioned companies are: Auchan, Carrefour, Cora, Quadrant-Amroq Beverages, Star Foods, Strauss Romania and Nelson Prod. Cora and Auchan will appeal the decision in court.

The Colosseum commercial centre from NW of Bucharest, of which extension entered in straight line by signing a contract with general contractor and by starting work, represents the most important retail development in Bucharest from the last three years, a period in which the buying power in the city raised with 20%, according to Cushman &Wakefield Echinox.

REWE Romania finished the remodelling of 170 Penny Market stores in Future Store format, in the whole country, by investments in value of over 120 millions lei. REWE Romania ended the year 2018 with a network of 236 Penny Market stores.

Carrefour Romania registered a growth of 6,1% in 2018, being the second market in the world for the french retailer as a growing percentage, after Argentine, and is the market with the biggest growth in Europe, according to the data published by the retailer.

During 2018, Ahold Delhaize, from which MEGA IMAGE from Romania is part of, registered sales of 62,8 billion euro, increasing with 2,5% than last year, at a constant exchange rate.

Kaufland Romania, the leader in the romanian grocery retail market, has been awarded the „Top Employer” in Romania for the fourth consecutive year and for the first time the title of „Top Employer” in Europe and Lidl Romania received the same „Top Employer” certification for the third consecutive year.

Lidl continues to invest in Romania by opening a new store in Ghiroda, Timis County, on January 31, 2019, the first one this year for the german retailer, the national network reaching 242 units.

In 2018, sales from the Farmec brand store network grew by 40%, and Online Farmec sales rose by 19% compared to 2017.

Farmec, the biggest Romanian producer of cosmetics, became, starting with December 2018, partner of eMAG, by listing the offer of cosmetics products in eMAG Marketplace platform.

According to the GPeC statistics and estimations, beside the estimations of the main players on e-commerce Romanian market, the value of online shopping exceeded the threshold of 3,5 billion euro in 2018, with almost 30% more than in 2017, when were registered 2,8 billion euro.

People

Nielsen, the global company of data measure and analyse, named Iulia Pencea in the position of Market Leader for Romania starting with 1st of February 2019 as a successor of Luca DeNard who will occupy the role of Market Leader of Nielsen Malaezia.

From January 2019, Kaufland Romania has a new Non-Food Acquisition Manager. Dan Alexandru Olaru has a solid experience of over 10 years in Kaufland Romania, in acquisition domain.
