Retail – Kaufland

Kaufland Romania continued the investment in Romania and opened in February 2023 a new hypermarket in Sibiu, one store in Brasov, one store in Barlad, one store in Comarnic, one store in Oradea and one in Caracal, reaching a network of 167 stores.

Retail – Profi

The networks of modern retail Profi and Auchan announced a partnership for negotiations to decrease the power of negotiation of these two networks, in the advantage of the final consumers.

Profi, the retailer that owns the network with the biggest national coverage and with the most stores in Romania, opened 6 stores in February 2023, reaching a national network of 1.653 stores.

Retail – PENNY

PENNY, one of the most active retailers in Romania, continued its plan of expansion by opening a new store in Insuratei city and one store in Alexandria, reaching 338 stores.

Retail – Auchan

Developed by DRUID AI, the end-to-end platform for building conversational apps for businesses based on artificial intelligence, the virtual assistant Felix is the solution identified by b for efficiency and automation of the processes in the IT helpdesk zone.

Auchan Romania reconfirmed the support for promoting local values, sustainable tourism and the development of the cities and the communities through culture, becoming official partner of the European Capital of Culture 2023.

As part of the modernizing and digitizing of the company, Auchan began to remodel the lines of cash registers and to build a 100% self check-out route for clients.

Retail – Lidl

Lidl continued the investment on the local market by opening a new store in Barlad, Vaslui county. The retailer also opened the biggest logistic center from its portfolio, in Fundeni, Calarasi county.

Retail – Carrefour

5 to go launched a strategic partnership with Carrefour, one of the biggest supporters of the Romanian entrepreneurship community, through national programs and initiatives on long term, with positive impact in the society. This collaboration materializes by the presence on the shelf in the Carrefour hypermarkets of the 5 to go products dedicated to retail, by opening 11 locations with the name Coffee Corner 5 to go and the coffee shops in the snacking zone of the Carrefour stores.

Carrefour group announced a strong financial performance in 2022 – a growth of sales with 8.5% than 2021, an increase of 26% of the e-commerce sector and a net free record cash flow available of 1.262 millions euro in 2022, than with 1.227 millions in 2021. Romania occupied the second position as evolution of the market share on European plan, with an increase of 9% in comparable terms (LFL).

Carrefour Romania and WorldSkills Romania Foundation, with the support of Carrefour Foundation from France, launched Education for Sustainable Cooking, a project addressed to students and professors in the professional and technical education.

Retail – other retailers

Maxi Pet, a top player on the retail market dedicated to pets, opened the first store in Targu Mures.

FMCG

AGROSEL, the first private seed research station in Romania, founded HEKTAR SEEDS, a company that will address exclusively to vegetable growing professional clients, through the premium brand HEKTAR.

Timisoara is the home of the newest line of nectar of organic gooseberry, Frootya, developed by an entrepreneur that invested 1.000.000 euro of own funds and European funds since 2013 and until now in growing this plant with  recognized properties.

Caii de la Letea made, in partnership with the Romanian federation of Rugby, a new range of premium wines – The Heart of Oak – with a fresh visual identity, inspired by the timeless image of resistance, courage and force – the oak – that is also the logo of the national team of rugby of Romania.

Bergenbier S.A., part of the group Molson Coors, launched two products with 0.0% alcohol in the premium range, Staropramen 0.0 and Stella Artois 0.0.

Agricover, an important player on the agribusiness market in Romania, named Bogdan Dimcea as General Manager of Agricover Distribution SA.

The students of Bakery School won the first place at the WorldSkills Olympics of Confectionery and Bakery, at both specializations.

Macromex, one of the main players in the Romanian food industry, aims an increase of two digits in 2023 and sees the Moldavian region in top, as an opening for innovation in FMCG and contribution to business.

Tuborg Romania made an important step to use the green energy and announced the start of Solar Project, implemented by installing solar panels meant to decrease the consume of electric energy and the pollutant emissions.

Food Service

Glovo, the multi-category platform that offers access to a wide range of products, launched the program ”The commitment for couriers” in Romania.

The founder of Strong MND Corporation, Stefan Mandachi, sold the company and the label Spartan for 20.3 millions euro (15.5 million euro for the company Strong MND Corporation and 4.53 millions euro for the label Spartan).

EcoBioGreen

RetuRO Sistem Garantie-Returnare S.A., the administrator of the system guarantee-returning (SGR), announced that the companies that produce or sell products from the bottled water categories, beverages, beer, cider, wine, alcoholic drinks, in non-reusable primary packaging of plastic, glass or aluminium, with dimensions between 0.1 liters and 3 liters, had a little time to fulfill the legal obligation to register in the data base of the system guarantee-returning, until 28th of February 2023.

E-commerce

At Sezamo online supermarket, 3 of 4 shopping baskets have at least one bakery product, and 2 of 5 baskets have at least one pastry product, even if we talk about local artisan products and own products.

Sezamo online supermarket, part of the European group Rohlik, delivered 60.000 orders in 2022.

Services

The producers, importers and sellers of beverages that are packed in non-reusable primary packaging have new obligations in the system of guarantee-return (SGR). Until 28th of February 2023, they had to register in the data base managed by the administrator of SGR, to avoid the fines between 4000 and 10000 euro.

In a period in which the inflation generated a significant growth on the prices, Cargus gave a new value to the national currency, launching the most unexpected offer in the industry of courier: the smallest price for the most convenient delivery. Launched in November 2021, the Cargus subscriptions with deliveries included represent a preferred solution of over 3000 small and medium companies of different industries, live FMCG, fashion or IT&C a service offered by Cargus represents a very good inflation shield: is fixed on the entire agreement period and reduces the delivery costs until 87%.

The Retail Media market in Romania will grow with almost 35% in 2023, according to Footprints AI, a Romanian company that operates one of the most advanced platforms of Retail Media in the world.

The analysis made by MerchantPro – a platform of Saas solutions for e-Commerce – on the data registered by over 1500 online local stores showed an increase of 12.5% of the number of orders and of 22% of value in 2022, than in 2021.

CTP, the biggest owner and developer of industrial and logistics spaces in Romania, continued the investments in green energy by installing photovoltaic centers with a capacity of 1.5 MW in the industrial park CTPark Bucharest, placed in the west of Bucharest.

Studies

Starcom Romania launched the ninth edition of Consumer Report, that focused on the Romanians behavior on consuming online and offline content, what are the electronic devices used, reading preferences, shopping behavior and others.

Analysis

In February 2022, in grocery retail in Romania were opened 12 stores, in this account entering just the stores opened and officially released by the retailers.

The market share of the wine producers in Romania increased with over 20% than in 2020 at the highest level in the history, with almost 2.1 billions lei in 2021, according to KeysFin.

Romania is one of the most competitive countries in the Central and Eastern Europe about the retail market. The big development of the commercial spaces and the increased appetite of the Romanians for shopping encouraged new companies from different industries to extend and to enter on the local market, according to the CBRE Romania report – Market Outlook 2023, global leader on the real estate consultancy market.

Events

GPeC Winter School – the only series of intensive courses of E-Commerce and Digital Marketing in Romania – took place exclusively online on Zoom between 15th-19th of February 2023 and addressed to all the people interested in growing online sales, like specialists in digital marketing.

Valentin Stefan, General Manager of the National Company Romanian Post, came at the 12th edition of the annual event HR 2.0 – What motivates the employees in crisis times, organized by Wall-street.ro, and that took place on 23rd of February 2023 at Hotel Sheraton.

The only technic complete event in Romania, dedicated to the refrigeration and air conditioning industry – NATURAL REFRIGERANTS 2023 took place on 23rd-25th of February, in Bucharest.  These are the conclusions of teh event.

Votat Produsul Anului Romania launched the competition Voted The Product of The Year Own Label, that will award the innovative products that are own labels of the stores, based on the biggest study on the Romanian consumers.
