The most important events of 2016 in romanian grocery retail, where the market was observed from retailers focus on both the expansion and the consolidation.

Penny Market launched Penny FM, first live radio instore in Romania. At the same time, REWE Romania launches the concept „of Romania” by communicating developments Penny Market brand positioning.

At the end of 2016, Polish Enterprise Fund VI (PEF VI) signed an agreement to sell 100% stake in supermarket network PROFI Rom Food, in Romania, at a value of 533 millions shares sold, the biggest deal from romanian retail. PROFI retailer has opened in January 10 stores in Romania and bring the national network to a total of 511 units.

METRO GROUP has sold the last 4 stores real in Romania. Real Hyper Magazine Company owned 4 stores in the hypermarket format: real Arad, real Constanta Nord, real Oradea and real Suceava, units that were not part of the transaction between METRO Group and Auchan Group, back in november 2012. After this transaction, they remained part of METRO GROUP and continued to be operated under the brand Real.

Ahold Delhaize, which includes also the Mega Image network, has had in the last quarter of 2016, in Romania, the largest increase in sales in the region. Mega Image announced the opening of the first store this year, under Shop & Go banner, in Bucharest, network currently reaching 527 stores.

Lidl continues to invest in Romania by opening a store in Drobeta Turnu Severin city, bringing the number of stores to a total of 205 units.

Carrefour opened its first supermarket in Băicoi, Prahova country, reaching a total of 119 stores in supermarket format (Market banner). Carrefour Group operates 290 stores: 32 hypermarkets ‘Carrefour’, 117 supermarkets ‘Market’, 44 convenience stores ‘Express’, 10 convenience stores ‘Contact’, 86 Billa stores and an e-commerce store: www.carrefour-online.ro.

Kaufland Romania, one of the largest retail companies in Europe and lider of romanian grocery retail, has launched two own brands, Bio-K and K-veggie take it, especially for those who want to have a healthy lifestyle.
