retailRetail – Lidl

Lidl continued the investment in the local market by opening a new store in Beius, Bihor district, and a new store in Timisoara.

Lidl Romania launched a big awareness campaign for Romanians to discourage one of the main causes of food waste: the behavior to shop a product even if we already have it.

Retail – Auchan

On the 3rd of October, Auchan Bradu hypermarket from Pitesti reopened for its clients with a new, modern design, with extended and specialized services and ranges, structured as food and non-food specialist universes.

Auchan opened the first franchise store Simply by Auchan from Teleorman, reaching three units at the national level.

18 years after opening the first store – Auchan Titan, the retailer developed a multi-format network having now over 440 stores at the national level, such as Auchan, ATAC, MyAuchan, and Simply that serve daily over 350.000 clients.

Auchan Romania published the fourth Sustainability Report of the company, an annual transparency approach about the activities and initiatives of the company in the last year.

Retail – Mega Image

The Competition Council announced on the 9th of October 2024 that puts on public debate the commitments proposed by Delhaize „The Lion” Nederland B.V.m the operator of Mega Image, to address identified competitive concerns on the products acquiring market from suppliers, in the context of the acquisition of Profi Rom Food.

Mega Image defined the commitments that will assure a good functioning of the market, rather the Competition Council will approve the economic concentration resulting from the acquirement from Ahold Delhaize of Profi Rom Food, the company that operates the Profi store network in Romania.

The Competition Council puts on public debate the second set of commitments proposed by Delhaize „The Lion” Nederland B.V. (Mega Image) to address identified competitive concerns in the FMCG commerce market. Also, Mega Image announced that it defined and proposed to the Competition Council a series of structural commitments about the FMCG selling market.

Retail – PENNY

PENNY Romania continued its expansion and announced the opening of the 383rd store in Cluj-Napoca.

Retail – Kaufland

Kaufland Romania expanded its presence at the national level and opened a third store in Pitesti and a new store in Suceava, reaching 183 hypermarkets in Romania.

Retail – Profi

Via-Profi.ro platform, launched by Profi a year ago, received the most important recognition for community development in Romania.

Profi, the retailer that owns the biggest national coverage network and the most stores in Romania, opened 8 stores in October 2024.

Profi demonstrated its commitment to supporting the small local producers in Romania, through its innovating platform Via Profi, for which it received three important awards.

Retail – Carrefour

Carrefour Romania launched the second chapter of the Act for Food program, which supports the access of clients at the best food products at the correct prices.

Carrefour Romania finished the integration process of Lujerului hypermarket from Bucharest, in the Supernova commercial center from Iuliu Maniu Boulevard no 19.

The cooperatives that are part of the Gradina Noastra program delivered in Carrefour stores over 60 million units of fruits and vegetables, between the years 2023-2024.

Retail – other retailers

The retail and logistics sector continued to develop in 2024, with a cumulated surface of 728.500 sqm that represents the newly added stock this year, according to the conclusions of OMNICHANNEL CONFERENCE, an event organized in Bucharest.

Cushman & Wakefield Echinox real estate consulting company was named the exclusive agent to realize and implement the renting strategy of Junbo Center in Bucharest, a modern destination of retail for the entire family, partially owned by the toys and home products retailer, Jumbo.

Burger King continued its expansion plan in Romania and opened the first restaurant in Ploiesti, in AFI Ploiesti commercial center, the second restaurant in Pitesti, in Pitesti Shopping Park, the first restaurant in Oradea in Lotus Center, and a new restaurant in VIVO! Baia Mare..

5 to go Romanian brand, that recently passed the milestone of 600 opened locations, reached the 7th place in the European top of cafe chains, according to the ranking published by Food Service, Europe & Middle East for 2023.

Sphera Franchise Group, the biggest food service operator in Romania, expanded its portfolio with Cioccolatitaliani Italian franchise, part of Gioia Group.

Tazz, one of the most important delivery platforms in Romania, part of eMAG group, signed an agreement for the acquisition of its social parts by Wolt, a local selling platform from Finland with operations in 28 countries.

Popeyes opened a new restaurant in Brasov, being the fifth city in Romania where it is present.

Premier Restaurants Romania, the operator of the McDonald’s restaurants network in Romania, opened the first McDonald’s Drive-Thru in Giurgiu.

E-commerce

Bringo, the first brand that brought a shopping delivery service in Romania, and Carrefour Romania announced a new innovative function: the collection of packages that have a guarantee from the Guarantee-Returning System at the orders placed in Carrefour hypermarkets.

According to a survey made by Glovo, 92% of the partner companies (restaurants and retailers) have registered significant increases in the average monthly volume of sales from the beginning of the collaboration with Glovo Romania.

Sezamo online supermarket celebrated two years after its official launching in Romania, meanwhile increasing by over 150% to the last year.

Freshful celebrated three years since launching in Romania.

With the occasion of International Pasta Day, the most recent analysis made by Glovo showed that Romania occupies the first place in Southern-Eastern Europe at pasta consumption, with an average of over 130 ordered portions each hour.

EcoBioGreen

RetuRO, the administrator of the Guarrantee-Returning System, the biggest circular economy project in Romania, announced the record results at 10 months after the implementation.

People

PepsiCo, one of the leaders of the food products and beverages industry, announced two promotions in its management team for the Eastern Europe region. Also, the producer named Razvan Lungu as the Chief Financial Officer for Eastern Balkans.

The multinational food group Sigma named Giampaolo Manzonetto as General Manager of Caroli Foods Group.

Services

Cargus, one of the main courier companies in Romania, expanded its portfolio by launching an international service, permitting its clients to send packages from Romania to external destinations, like Bulgaria and Greece, as a first step.

Blindspot and POS Media Romania signed an exclusive partnership to offer brands a complete communication solution in retail marketing.

SAMEDAY, one of the biggest players in the courier market in Romania, announced that, in the first year, SAMEDAY APP, the mobile app that manages the packages, registered 2 million downloads, becoming the most used courier app in the country. The company estimates an increase of over 40% in the number of packages that will be delivered for Black Friday, at the regional level, than last year, supported by the continuous investment in the expansion of the easybox network and the increase of the operational capacity.

CTP, the biggest developer, owner, and administrator of industrial and logistics spaces in Europe, consolidated the strategic partnership with FAN Courier by renting a surface of 4500 sqm in CTPark Deva.

FM Logistic celebrated a key moment in its history, at a ceremony that highlighted its trip from the past to the future.

Analysis

In September 2024, grocery retail in Romania opened 20 stores, with this number being just the stores opened and officially released by the retailers.

Studies

A recent survey made by Bonapp (bonapp.eco), the first Romanian app meant to fight food waste, on the occasion of the International Day of Food Waste Awareness (29th of September), showed that 90% of the 350.000 users became more aware of this problem and almost half of them took active measures to organize better the waste in its households.
