In September 2017, the FMCG retailers from Romania opened a total number of 28 stores, compared to 23 units opened in August 2017. Retailers like PROFI (629 stores in total) and Carrefour (303 units in total) opened stores in September, in supermarket format.
PROFI, the retailer owned by private equity fund managed by Mid Europa Partners, has expanded the national network to 629 stores and remains the retailer with the most units but also the one with the largest expansion in Romania, present in 343 localities. The retailer managed to open a total of 19 stores in Romania only in September.
Profi registered a remarcable increase of turnover – 35% – in the first half of the year.
Carrefour announced finishing remodeling process of Billa stores in Romania, a process that lasted 7 months. Also in september Carrefour opened 3 new stores in Vaslui, in Cluj-Napoca and in Stefanestii de Arges, reaching a total of 303 units in all formats.
Penny Market opened in september 4 new stores, in Bucharest, Braila, Bacau and Simeria, reaching a total of 209 stores.
Auchan Holding announced a revenue growth of 11,2% in Eastern Europe in the first half on 2017, Romania being one of the countries with great results.
Lidl continues investments in Romania and opened in September a new store in Bucharest, reaching 212 units.
Selgros Cash&Carry Romania, one of the most important operators of Romanian commerce, opened at Bistrita the third unit in a compact format, after the ones in Targu Mures and in Alba Iulia.
The volume of retail trade in Romania increased with 1.2% in July 2017, compared with July 2016, being the second highest increase in European Union, according to Eurostat report.

Caroli Food Group, the leading market leader in packaged meat products in Romania, is now part of Sigma Alimentos (”Sigma”), after the Mexican company bought 51% of Caroli shares, adding them at 49% of which it already owned through the Campofrio Food Group.
