Before seeing which were the most important events in grocery retailing from Romania, in the first three months of 2015, let’s look at a graph with the evolution of grocery retailers in Romania, with all the openings stores, between 2012 and 2014: 

The evolution of grocery retail

2015 began with a big storm in grocery retail and FMCG industry in Romania: 4 retailers (Metro, Real, Selgros and Mega Image) and 21 of their suppliers fined with 35 million euros by the Romanian Competition Council in the investigation for fixing prices between retailers and their suppliers, in 2005-2009 period.

The Romanian Competition Council wants to launch this year, „The monitor prices, while the Association of Big Commercial Networks in Romania (AMRCR), who includes all retailers from Romania, challenges the usefulness of introducing this online platform and announced that he would not support the project.

In 2014, the turnover from retail, in Romania, increased as gross series by 7.0%, compared to 2013, according to INS (National Statistics Institute).

REWE Romania opened, in january, a new Penny Market store in Bragadiru, near Bucharest and reach a national network of 164 units. Penny Market is the second large discounter retailer after Lidl Romania which has 184 stores. Penny Market are testing a new format, in Bucharest, a format improved and adapted to urban consumers and reopened a store located in south of the capital.

PROFI opened 6 supermarkets this year, its network reaching a total of 284 stores in Romania.

Auchan will open, at the end of march, a new hypermarket in Coresi Center, the newest Commercial Center developed by Immochan Romania, the real estate division of Auchan Romania, in Brasov. Auchan Coresi, the 33th hypermarket of the Auchan network in Romania, will be the biggest hypermarket in Transilvania (13.300 mp).

The 4th Supeco store was opened in Giurgiu this month. Supeco is a new store format introduced last year by Carrefour Romania on the Romanian market, with a sales area of between 1,500 and 2,000 square meters, a unique format that mixes discounter with the cash & carry formats and provides consumers low prices, with focus on fresh category and consumer goods.

Mega Image inaugurated only one store this year, in Bucharest, a store under the Shop&Go banner and the national network reached a total of 411 units.

Carrefour opened one supermarket Market in Bucharest, bringing the network to a total of 92 stores in this format. A new hypermarket will be opened in april 23, in Bucharest, in the future Mega Mall Commercial Center and another one in Timisoara, in autumn, the Carrefour first hypermarket from the West side of the country.

In Romania, Carrefour Group counts 173 stores including 27 hypermarkets ‘Carrefour’, 92 supermarkets ‘Market’, 44 proximity stores ‘Express’, 9 convenience stores ‘Contact’ and an online shop: www.Carrefour-online.ro.

Retailers like Kaufland, Lidl, Billa or cora not opened yet any store in this year.
