In the current technological era and in the increasing the number of smartphone users, Google Consumer Barometer presents a study that reflects Romanian’s interest in online commerce and technology use.
In October 2017, the FMCG retailers from Romania opened a total number of 26 stores, compared to 28 units opened in October 2017. Retailers like PROFI (648 stores in total) and Carrefour (305 units in total) opened stores in October, in supermarket format.
PROFI, the retailer owned by private equity fund managed by Mid Europa Partners, has expanded the national network to 648 stores and remains the retailer with the most units but also the one with the largest expansion in Romania, present in 353 localities. The retailer managed to open a total of 19 stores in Romania only in October.
Penny Market opened in October 2017 3 new stores, in Iasi, Agigea and Satu-Mare, the national network reaching a total of 212 units.
Carrefour launched a new fidelity program, Card Plus, on October 2, in the Market Network of 22 cities. Also, has recorded an international sales growth of 1.9% in the third quarter of 2017 at equal exchange rates. 9.2% of sales in Romania, the largest in Europe. Carrefour opened in October 2 new stores, in Timisoara and in Focsani, reaching a total of 305 units.
Alexandre Bompard, the new President and CEO of the Carrefour Group, announced the creation of an Executive Committee of the group as well as its composition. Guillaume de Colonges is Carrefour’s new CEO for North-East Europe, including Belgium, Poland and Romania.
Mega Image opened in October 1 new store, in Cluj-Napoca, reaching a total of 563 units.
METRO AG announced a 0.5% increase in its net sales in the financial year 2016/17 according to preliminary figures and a sales increase of 1.6% to EUR 37.1 billion. Also, METRO Cash & Carry Romania repositions LaDoiPaşi‘s proximity brand as an independent franchise and targets 2000 stores by 2020. In Austria the German METRO Group announced the opening of the first cash & carry zero-energy store in St. Petersburg, Pölten.
