Grocery retail market maintained its positive trend registered in last 2-3 years and the expansions continues on the proximity formats, supermarket and discounter.

Retail
One of the development solutions for the smal grocery stores represents the aquisition of a franchise and the grocery retailers on the romanian market which are providing these francises are Mega Image with Shop&Go, Carrefour with Express and Contact and Metro Cash&Carry with LaDoiPasi.
In January 2018, the FMCG retailers from Romania opened a total number of 15 stores, compared to 40 units opened in December 2017.
PROFI retailer, owned by private equity fund managed by Mid Europa Partners, has expanded the national network to 705 stores and remains the retailer with the most units but also the one with the largest expansion in Romania, present in 386 localities. The retailer managed to open a total of 10 stores in Romania only in January. Also, the retailer registered a 7 billion lei (over 1 billiard euro) revenue, in 2017, that represents a percentage growth of 34,4% compared with 2016. The retailer target is 250 new stores in 2018.
Carrefour Romania closed the hipermarket from Vitantis Shopping Center, considering the changes in the local market environment and client preferences. Also it registered a 7,8% sales growth, the biggest in Europe.
Mega Image opened in the second half of December 2017 11 new stores and in January 2018 opened 3 new stores, reaching 599 units.
Kaufland opened in January 2 new stores, reaching a total of 118 units. Also, the retailer launched The Embassy of Sustainability in Romania, the place that brings together the leaders that fight for an economic environment and responsible society in Romania.
REWE Romania finished the process of renting the commercial centers in Braila, Bucharest, Targoviste, Buzau and Ploiesti from the former XXL Mega Discount stores.
Lidl Romania obtains ISO 50001 certificate, the highest international standard for energy management assigned by DEKRA Certification GmbH for all the 4 logistic centers and 219 stores of the retailer.
In 2017, were triggered 19 investigations regarding possible violations of Competition Law, with 31,5% more than last year, according to Competition Counsel analysis of the year 2017.

Farmec, the biggest romanian cosmetics producer, invested 650.000 euro in refurbishment and upgrading production processes in 2017. Also, the company announced that Hialuronic Acid Ampoules of 5% concentration and Colagen Ampoules mantain the top romanian preferences, being in 2017 the most bought products in online store. The company also launched in its make-up segment the Gerovital Beauty range.
Coca-Cola Company started the year with a new launch on the romanian market: FUZETEA, a brand that adresses to the consumers that need relaxing moments. FUZETEA is a fusion between tea extract, fruit juice and aromatic plants. Also, the company launched the new vertical dose for its brands.
Agricola Stores Company has a new CEO, and marks the move of the organization into a new stage.
Zahărul Oradea SA fabric, the producer of the Diamant sugar, will be closed in this spring, being considered by the owners as an unprofitable unit, after it had numerous failings.
